These Finance Board Games and Books Will Help Kids Learn Money Management Skills

Board games are a great way to spend time with your friends and family and help pass the time. However, sometimes just having the opportunity to play board games can be a struggle. Will you be able to play through all of your games? Will these games teach you anything about finance, or will you just be left scratching your head?

Check out this list of top 5 board games that teach finances (in no particular order).

CASH FLOW FOR KIDS (6+)

2+ Players

This is one of my kids’ favorite games. Intending to get out of the rat race, you go around the board collecting assets and liabilities. Some tough decisions need to make — a lot of the same decisions adults fail at every day. Things like, should I buy a new boat or invest for retirement? It instills important concepts at a young age.

Learning Concepts:

  • Identify the difference between assets and liabilities
  • Financial decision making
  • Critical thinking

THE ALLOWANCE GAME (5+)

2-4 Players

Kids do chores to earn an allowance, and they can spend the money however they see fit! It's a fun way for young kids to learn how to handle money, make a change and interact with others. It also helps them identify money values, and do basic math.

Learning Concepts:

  • Handle money
  • Make change
  • Identify money values
  • Basic math

EXACT CHANGE CARD GAME (5+)

2+ Players

Like Uno, whoever plays all their cards first wins. It has a lot in common with Uno, except it uses money values and making change, instead of basic numbers. Exact Change has won multiple seals of approval from several learning agencies.

Learning Concepts:

  • Make change
  • Basic math
